DAY 10: ALWAYS HAVE A CAMERA WITH YOU

I woke up early today, around 6am. It was cool so I could take my time in the shower. Before that though I filled the wood house again and then took a shower. It was freezing cold so I decided to use warm water instead of the usual ice cold one.

After I took the shower I went to the office to keep writing the journal and it worked for a little bit. Then I got into a vegan conversation with Jim again, but a family of foxes just stopped by the office. We were so amazed and Fran started shouting without realizing it because she had no hearing plug. I passed Jim his smartphone and grabbed my camera. Fran gave me some peanuts so I went really close to one fox to offer it some peanuts, but it did not even sniff it. The youngest one got closer to me but I guess peanuts are not their favorite food. It was a magical moment to me because I really love the book “The Little Prince”, so it made me feel like I could befriend something so distant from me and so wild. Befriending is wonderful because it takes time, but it also gives you the chance to bond with someone or something else: “it is the time that you spent with your rose that made it so important”. This encounter is one of the reasons why I should always keep a camera with me around here.

Me and Jim could not work on the cabin together because it was still early and some guests might have been still sleeping. So we went and fix cabin 9’s bed and checked the tiny cabin to get a better understanding of how to build the roof. At our return we had brunch with all of the people who have kids. It was a nice brunch since I got to eat a lot and had some meat since a long time (though it has been just few days really). Moreover, I had some vegan pancakes with maple syrup. What can be more Canadian than having maple syrup? The food was enough to give me the energy to work on the cabin.

I worked with Jim on the roof frame for three five straight hours. To avoid a heat stroke I wrapped my t-shirt around my head like a tuareg in the desert. We did lots of stuff and tomorrow we could be done with the outer walls and both the cabin’s and the desk’s roof. We had a short break in the middle to enjoy a great smoothie. I thought it was kiwi but I never seem to get ingredients right here. That is what a vegan diet can do to someone who is not used to it.

It is funny because now the kids greet me and call me “Monkey” whenever they see me. Haven is a little cutie who loves his mom so much. Asher, well we know Asher is a hell of a boy. For his young age he is really incredibly smart and “advanced”. Then there is River who is as fearless as one could be. If he sees anyone doing something, he will do it. It could be dangerous because he does not know his own limits but I think it is a good thing as long as there is someone watching over him for the time being until he grows enough to understand what he is doing. We got Damian too but he is too young (he is around 18 months).

At 3pm Laila took out the German side of herself telling us to hurry because we were late on the activity schedule. We should have been leaving at that exact hour, but me and Jim just finished our carpenter jobs. We were having a toast with peanut butter, moreover he had to lawn the grass at cabin 9 with Asher. So we were going to be pretty late and that upset Laila’s German inner self a little. I took my time to enjoy my toast in the middle of the grass around my trailer. I just sit there and watched towards the road where the foxes usually come from.

Fran and Laila came searching for me while I was in the trailer changing, so I sprinted out while shouting “I am here!” but I got sent to another car. I went with Alyssa, Jim and Asher in the direction of Sunridge. The plan was going there to swim and have a dinner picnic. Me and Asher played during all the ride and again I lost track of the times he asked me to pretend being a monkey.

Once we got there we played at the playground. I taught them “Shark” changing the name in “Monkey” to make it more appealing to them. I played a lot with the kids because I saw the adults so spent from the day and wanted to help them relax. We played tag, horse riding and make-believe pretending to be fire fighters.

The people went to swim then and I took my time off, trying to keep writing this journal. They came back pretty quickly so we could have dinner together. Asher wanted to sit close to me and he even hugged me. I felt so warm because the moment was so cute and it feels so fulfilling when a kid comes to give you his/her love. They are innocent creatures and they will give you unconditional love.

After dinner I played again with them until everyone got back in the water again. I kept my decision of not getting wet, so I stayed with Melissa to eat popcorn and to try to keep my journal updated. Though I ended up going in the water anyway because everyone was having fun. I regretted it at the beginning because the water was so shallow and sandy. Moreover, I did not bring a towel with me. But once I was in there with everyone, I just kept playing with the kids. Obviously, they asked me to do the monkey.

We got out and I helped myself to dry by working out at the monkey bars in the playground. Apparently everyone was enjoy the water too much to get out, so I went to our picnic table and tried to write down the day. It helped a lot cause I had much time to spend on the other days that I have to catch up with.

On the way back Asher devoured popcorn with nutritional yeast and we played again different games. Of course he made me do the monkey. This time I was the dancing monkey doing the feet movements he invented. Once we arrived we saw a fox with a chipmunk in its mouth going back to the woods. We watched until the fox was visible, then I helped Jim moving a barbecue set from cabin 5 to the tiny cabin. It seemed Asher might throw a rant to avoid sleeping time but he went to his mom without the need to tell him. As soon as I finished helping Jim, Fran asked for some help unloading. After that I was finally free to take a shower and work on my travel journal.

I planned to stay the whole night focused on writing, but Melissa and Bettina invited me and Laila to have a campfire together, so we joined them for a little more than one hour. I thought it was kind of rude to bail on them twice and they are super nice people. That is why I went and stayed for some songs. They praised me which makes me always feel appreciated. To keep me there, Bettina tried to bribe me with some wine and horror stories so I just ran away for the fear of getting too scared.

Now I am writing these final lines and I feel peaceful enough to get to my trailer and sleep.
